Badmaash Company

Badmaash Company

Genre: Drama
Cast: Shahid Kapur, Anushka Sharma, Meiyang Chang, Vir Das, Anupam Kher, Kiran Juneja, Pawan Malhotra, Jameel Khan
Director: Parmeet Sethi

Badmaash Company written and directed by Parmeet Sethi is about four friends; Karan (Shahid Kapoor), Bulbul (Anushka Sharma), Chandu (Vir Das) and Zing (Chang). The four get together and smuggle goods to idea, by basically fooling the Customs Officers, with several disguises and tricks. Overnight they turn rich, but when their luck's run out, they relocate to the Unites States to carry out more rackets.

Earning easy money soon turns into greed for Karan, who believes he's the main man - the boss of the gang. All hell breaks loose and the four, once good friends, go their separate ways.

There are several sequences in
Badmaash Company that reminds you of Yashraj'sBunty Aur Babli, but what's disappointing is, while the cons get more ambitious, the basic idea remains the same. It all starts with shoes in India, followed by gloves and houses in US. So while all is good in the first hour or so, the second hour is disastrously boring. Things only get worse when the four part ways with Karan returning to India, right on time for his dad's award and eventually returning back to US, only to be arrested by the cops.

Just when you think, things couldn't really get worse from here on, comes the climax involving none other than Michael Jackson (his lookalike), who is used to sell defective shirts. Deserves a razzie or our very own Golden Kela award for the worst scene of the year. And what's with Karan's marriage to an American for a green card? It's just mentioned once, due to which Bulbul goes away from his life, but when they do reconcile, there is no mention of it.

Moving to the brighter side, the first hour is very entertaining and immensely watchable. Anushka Sharma has gone in for a complete makeover and she does manage to look sexy. Shahid Kapur is in form once again after a terrible outing with
Chance Pe Dance. Vir Das on debut is very good. Chang is expressionless.

Chemistry between the actors is nice; the bonding that the four share works very well in the first hour. Pritam's tunes go well with the film.

To sum up,
Badmaash Company is at its core a very 'Bollywood' film. Had much potential to be a mass entertainer, tragically though, the second half is a major let down.
